Therapy

At Hopewell we use therapy both in the group setting and through individual sessions. Our approach is eclectic therapy, which is also referred to as multi-modal therapy. In reality, that's just a fancy way to say that we use a more flexible and multifaceted approach that allows the therapist to use the most effective methods available to address our student's individual needs. Within that approach, we typically utilize cognitive-behavioral and systems therapies.

Cognitive behavior therapy is "talk therapy" that can help students manage their problems and boost happiness by focusing on solutions and encouraging students to challenge distorted cognitions and change destructive patterns of behavior. Distressed students can often misunderstand problems or situations, often either blowing things out of proportion or ignoring things that need immediate attention. Our therapeutic approach helps students to identify harmful thoughts and misperceptions, assess whether they are an accurate depiction of reality, and if they are not, employ strategies to challenge and overcome them.

Systems therapy helps groups gain insight into how each member’s role within a group may affect its functionality. It helps students as members of a group attain positive relationships, secure interrelationships, and overall well-being. Dialogue in the group is constructed to build knowledge, strength, and support for an entire entity. In systems therapy, student relationships, patterns, communication, and behaviors are examined within and beyond the therapy session, allowing the therapist and students to observe how certain behaviors could be impacting the group. Once these behaviors are recognized and understood, students can learn new behaviors that have benefits for themselves and the rest of the students.
